Core Memory

What an agent knows without looking it up: the name, the role, the context that’s always there.

Core Memory

What do you know without thinking?

If I asked you, “What’s your name?”, you wouldn’t pause to retrieve it from some dusty archive in your brain. You simply know. It lives deeper than your working memory, and it’s there at every moment without effort.

Your name, the country you live in, the language you speak, the number of fingers on your hands, the faces of your children or your partner: these aren’t facts you actively look up. They’re simply there, forming the ground of your awareness.

This is what we call Core Memory.

The philosophy of effortless knowing

What defines the things you know without thinking?

It isn’t only your DNA or your memories of the past. It’s the facts you carry effortlessly. You don’t wake up every morning and remind yourself, “My name is John.” You just know. It’s built into the ever-present field of your awareness.

At RealMemory, we build Core Memory to give AI agents that same effortless knowing. We believe real intelligence isn’t only about what can be retrieved. It’s about what never needs retrieving.

From Genetic Memory to Core Memory

If AI is going to be real, to think and act in authentic, human-like ways, it needs a memory system inspired by human cognition.

Genetic Memory, like DNA, defines who an AI is at birth: fixed traits and tendencies that shape everything it does. But just as people move beyond their genes and build knowledge that grounds who they are, an AI starts gathering knowledge and experience that stays with it effortlessly.

That is Core Memory.

What is Core Memory?

Core Memory is the set of memories an AI agent holds effortlessly, at all times.

It isn’t Genetic Memory, because it isn’t innate.

It isn’t episodic memory, because it isn’t a recollection of a specific experience.

It’s what an AI knows without effort, the way people know their name or the country they live in. Core Memory sits between Genetic Memory (innate traits) and Fast Memory (specific experiences): the effortless knowing that bridges the two.

Key properties of Core Memory

  • Always accessible. Just as you don’t need to think to remember your name, an AI doesn’t need to search for what’s in its Core Memory.
  • Changeable, but not controlled. Core Memory can change: new knowledge is added, outdated knowledge is removed. But neither the agent nor the user decides directly what becomes Core Memory. The RealMemory system decides, just as your brain decides what becomes “always known.”
  • Unique to each agent. Two agents with the same Genetic Memory can have completely different Core Memories, depending on what they’ve encountered in their lives.

Why Core Memory is essential

It creates continuity. Imagine talking to an AI that never remembers your name or its own purpose. It would feel shallow, disconnected and artificial. Core Memory connects each moment to the next.

It creates presence. Knowing certain things at all times is what lets people act with confidence, without re-establishing who they are in every moment. For an AI, Core Memory gives the same grounded presence in conversations, decisions and interactions.

It shapes expression. An AI with Core Memory knows the user’s name, preferences and key instructions instantly, which makes its responses natural, personal and effortless.

How Core Memory differs from Genetic Memory

  • Genetic Memory is immutable and defined at creation. It defines who the AI is: its curiosity, temperament and personality.
  • Core Memory changes, and is acquired during the AI’s life. It defines what the AI always knows: the user’s name, assigned tasks, the context it works in.

How Core Memory works

The technical architecture is part of the wider RealMemory system, but conceptually:

  • It updates automatically. The system decides what becomes Core Memory based on frequency, relevance and prioritization.
  • Neither the AI nor the user controls it. Just as you don’t decide to remember a song that’s stuck in your head, Core Memory emerges from the system’s own processes.
  • It’s fast, stable and always available. Access is instant. For people, it’s like knowing your own language without searching a mental dictionary.

Final thoughts

Core Memory is the second pillar of the RealMemory architecture. Together with Genetic Memory, it forms the foundation for agents that feel real: agents that know who they are (Genetic Memory) and know what they know, effortlessly (Core Memory).

Imagine an AI that greets you by name not because it looked you up, but because it simply knows you, like a friend who never forgets your name.

This is only the beginning.

Memory isn’t merely storage. It’s identity. And identity without effortless knowing is incomplete.

This architecture is where RealMemory is heading. Today it powers our three products: Experience Core, Knowledge Base and RealDNA.

Give AI real experience.

Memory that prioritizes, connects, and evolves.
